Fortunately, far more air is able to make it to your lungs than water, but it still takes several moments of struggling to regain your composure and clear the airways of the vile intruder. Now, imagine, you are underwater and you try to breathe, your first reflex would be trying to hold your breath, but still, if you happen to breath and have an actual lung full of water.
