To counter the DX invasion and to show the WWF he meant business, Eric Bischoff challenged the WWF's CEO Vince McMahon to a fight. This wasn't something the WWF were involved with, this wasn't a cross-promotional tactic, Bischoff was legitimately challenging Vince to show up at WCW Slamboree 1998 and step into the ring for a fight. Vince McMahon and the WWF's lawyer, Jerry McDevitt, sent a letter to WCW stating that Vince McMahon would not be appearing at Slamboree. In the same letter, McDevitt claimed that Vince McMahon was one of the WWF's most popular performers, a performer who was key to the WWF winning the ratings war. Bischoff poked fun at this statement on WCW Thunder and at the Slamboree show itself (by putting "the reason for the ratings" on McMahon's locker room door). Even though Vince had declined to show up at Slamboree, Bischoff still kept the doors open. The match was given a slot on the Slamboree pay per view and, in the end, the referee counted Vince McMahon out.
