Description: The Bellingham Subdivision is BNSF’s major western rail route connecting the United States with Canada. You can find a wide variety of BNSF trains on this line, sometimes even featuring locomotives from other railroads. On the average train, motive power from Canadian railroads is quite common but locomotives from the Union Pacific Railroad are only seen occasionally. There is, however, one type of train that can be seen relatively often with Union Pacific locomotives on the point. These are grain trains traveling between California’s Central Valley and Canada. The trains run south from Canada with grain destined for animal feed Silos located near Fresno, California. They are handled over the BNSF system as far as Portland, Oregon where they switch to Union Pacific rails. After continuing on to California and being unloaded, the trains return empty back to Canada. Frequently, they return north with Union Pacific locomotives leading the way. Let’s take a look at several of these trains as they head along the shore of Puget Sound and up the Bellingham Subdivision to Canada.
