The dimetrodon might look like a dinosaur, but it is an extinct non-mammalian synapsid "mammal-like reptile" (a group of animals that includes mammals and every animal more closely related to mammals than to the other members of the amniotes clade, such as reptiles and birds.) One of it's closest relatives is the Edaphosaurus.
