Description: It's time to finally unveil the winner of the Gems in the Rough Contest! Well, I suppose we already did that a couple months ago, but it's time to finally unveil this awesome recording we made with them in the office in Nashville. Tyler made two trips down to our neck of the woods, one to make this video with his buddy Collie Crawford on mandolin. The other trip was to play the Gems secret show with Nick Hans and Todd Day Wait. Both were pretty awesome experiences for me, and I hope for him. I'd not heard of Tyler before the contest, and him being as young as he is that doesn't surprise me. He is just getting started with his music, from the ground up playing bars with his band The Hill Figs. Lots of personality though, and some songwriting chops a good deal beyond his years. Though I'm not into making comparisons, in this instance I simply must point out how much his music reminded me of some of my favorite writers, like Adam Carroll and Chris Knight. He has a sense of humor all his own, dry and sharp. His favorite sad movie is Joe Dirt. I like the possum on his guitar strap. This won't be the last you hear of Tyler, from me or otherwise. The 2nd contest was another big learning experience. I went through 800 submissions all by myself and it was quite the task, but the friends I've made along the way, the new artists we have all discovered, made it all worthwhile.
