Description: The Tuʻi Tonga Empire, or Tongan Empire, are descriptions sometimes given to Tongan expansionism and projected hegemony in eastern Melanesia to Western & southern Polynesia which began around 950 CE, reaching its peak during the period 1200–1500 CE It was centered in Tonga on the island of Tongatapu, with its first capital at Toloa, Heketā then later at Muʻa. Modern researchers and cultural experts attest to widespread Tongan influence, evidence of buildings, monuments as well as maritime trade and exchange of material and cultural artefacts from Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Futuna to Rarotonga.
