Description: Thousands of troops patrol DR Congo after failed coup attempt Regional capitals are closely following the case of presidential security adviser Francois Beya, who has strong connections in Brazzaville, Bangui and Luanda and is also well-known in Western security circles, especially in the US, France and Israel. He remains in the custody of the DRC's main security and intelligence agency QUESTIONS: 👉 africanquestions@gmail.com SUBSCRIBE : 👉 goo.gl/jYw6so THOUSANDS of combat troops patrolled the streets of Kinshasa yesterday after a failed coup attempt in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The exercises saw the elite Republican Guard responsible for protecting the head of state and the country’s key institutions deployed in the main areas of the capital. It came after the arrest of presidential security adviser Francois Beya by DRC intelligence services earlier this month on suspicion of undermining state security. Mr Beya is seen as one of the most powerful figures in the African country and is accused of attempting to oust President Felix Tshisekedi, who came to power in December 2018. A power struggle between Mr Tshisekedi and supporters of his predecessor Joseph Kabila has continued since his election, the first peaceful, democratic transfer of power since independence from Belgium in 1960. Mr Beya is believed to remain in custody where he is under interrogation from security services. Saturday’s display of strength by the armed forces was welcomed by some residents of Kinshasa, one of whom said that the exercises should take place “every weekend.” .........................................................
