Are your melodies and solos lacking in emotion? Well, that’s because you’ll never be able to get your scales to sound emotional by playing the notes in their basic order. When it comes to getting a scale to sound more emotional there are no “shortcuts.” There isn’t a qualified collection of guru guitar licks that offer scale tones in a magical order to create emotion. The best way to stop having your scales sound boring is to learn how to apply the notes across the backing chords using interval ideas that balance consonance and dissonance. While you should practice scale exercises to developing the best technical skill, you don’t want to ignore learning about popular note pairs that promote both unstable and stable emotional effects. While targeting specific intervals may feel a bit awkward, (especially if you’re not used to hearing certain tonal colors), learning how to engage the intervals will offer powerful emotional results.
