I’m going to give you the best way for how to effectively take any melody line or rhythm guitar idea and play it EVERYWHERE along & across the neck. Some will tell you that this is complex and will take a student many years to master but, they simply don’t understand the anatomy of the fingerboard and they are sadly doing you a disservice by making you think that the neck is overly complicated. The neck is actually quite simple. Here’s the truth. The first thing that you need to do beyond anything else is realize that the guitar neck is only five frets long. After that, the notes repeat across five fret regions. This means the neck layout is; open to fifth fret, fifth to tenth fret, and tenth to fifteenth fret. This 5-fret rule is particularly important since each neck area accommodates musical parts sometimes the same, but other times differently. However, once the concept of using each region is known, it will give you the playing skill you’re looking for to understand EVERYTHING you need to know about the neck.
