But I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t notice. The laidback instrumental is pure ear-candy -- overshadowing the song’s darker narrative. Lyrically, the track speaks of a troubled teen who plans to shoot his classmates at school. It’s not very subtle. I mean the chorus tells us about seven times. Despite it’s questionable subject matter, it became the group’s breakthrough hit: ushering in a new wave of commercially viable indie-pop, sitting at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 for eight straight weeks and claiming Spotify’s most streamed song of 2011. How can such a cheerful track put such a dark and depressing twist on its lyrics? More surprisingly, why did we continue to enjoy it, even after we knew of the grim details?
