The progression helps keep the connection to the other musical parts within a good position through the piece. The underlying groove affects the way a melody will externally interact with the harmony (to keep it from banging into the wrong notes along the way). In the end, a good song has everything working together to keep the music centered in the while balancing the low points and elevation of each measure. One of the most common chord movements that we encounter as guitarists is the; i, iv, VI, VII Minor key progression. This movement is popular to songs in; Blues, Pop, Rock and many other styles. When listening to this progression, it is not surprising to hear the amount of mobility that the chords have and the simple ways that we can modify the progression for a new angle on the chords. In this lesson, I’m going to show you how to perform this progression in the key of “A Minor.” We’ll also cover common modifications that go along with it. The lesson will start with the; i, iv, VI, VII chords in open position and will move on to cover two popular modifications that are important to understand.
