Description: When you think about the deadliest 3 point shooters in the NBA, guys like Steph Curry, Devin Booker and Duncan Robinson immediately come to mind. But they’re way too high volume to lead the league in percentage. On the other hand, although it comes at 3 and a half attempts from downtown, the San Antonio Spurs have the most efficient shooter in the entire league at 47.2% and that is Keldon Johnson. If you’re not a hard core NBA viewer or a Spurs fan, you may not know this 22 year old wing. But you should. Despite the fact that the outside shot is not his primary weapon, Johnson has been improving, and worked on it a lot during the summer so the results are shocking but evident. Right now however you can notice right away that all of his shots are catch and shoot. And the stats confirm that. 49 out of his 50 made threes have been on 0 dribbles. He doesn’t even attempt them otherwise. So I guess that will be the next step in his game, being able to put the ball on the floor, make a move and raise up for three. The most interesting thing about it is that he was nowhere close to this at the start of the season. Keldon missed his first 10 three point attempts and took him until the 5th game to finally see one go through the net. But as he said it himself, he worked on it throughout the entire off season, so he continued to trust himself and wasn’t discouraged by the early struggles. Now obviously everyone can see the results. For a guy who mostly attacks inside the paint, and goes on strong drives to the basket, stretching out to the 3 point line has been great, and you can see on some of these examples, the opposition is still being caught unprepared for that so there are a lot of open looks when he pops outside. Speaking of the 3, I just want to mention that when you lower the field goal attempts and focus on the percentage, the top 10 list looks very interesting and has names that you otherwise wouldn’t expect. For example we got guys like Grant Williams, Mike Muscala and Quentin Grimes all firing away at a phenomenal percentage. So yeah, the next time that your team plays the Spurs, or you just happen to stumble upon a San Antonio game on TV, pay attention to this young fella and his outside shooting. I’m interested to see if he can increase his volume, and if he can add some variety to his shots- taking them off the dribble. That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.
