Description: I had a pretty simple question that I felt like I knew the answer to, but needed to see with my own eyes: Does bleach whiten wood? It seems obvious now, but the results were definitely dramatic. I figured that I'd take the opportunity to test a few other chemicals & liquids just to see if anything else would surprise me. Overall, nothing earth shattering, but it was still worth trying out some of the more common home-made stains like coffee and red wine. Some things surprised me by the lack of reactions, namely vinegar and hydrogen peroxide; those two left no trace that they even saturated the wood once the samples dried out. I might do a second round of tests with some harsher chemicals and other liquids, let me know in the comments what you'd like to see me test out! So far I'm thinking acetone, paint thinner, squid ink.
