Description: In this Show Talk episode Mike Stoops – Global Training Specialist at Meguiar’s again discusses car detailing as he goes into the “details” of why you should do a test spot. He also talks about how to do a test spot and things you should look out for so you can get the best results as quickly as possible the next time you do paint correction. You really don’t know how paint is going to respond to a method, a product, a pad or machine type until you begin to work with it. Even when we discuss the same make, model and year of a car, paint can vary as manufacturers can use different facilities and different paint suppliers. Paint can also change depending on what it’s exposed to and with age. Start off by washing and drying the paint. Then, clay if you have boned contaminants and use an iron decontaminant if you have embedded iron particles. The next step is to evaluate the paint. It’s not the best idea to start out with the most aggressive process as it will likely remove more paint than you really need and it can create “destructive paint repair” which is where you create your own defects that you’ll have to ultimately go back and remove. Instead, start off with something that not too aggressive and not too mild. If working by machine, you want to use it properly and be aware of how you are using it so you can duplicate your process when you find a combination that works. Remember to be aware of all factors including the compound, tool speed, pressure, arm speed and the size of the area you are working in. Modern clear coat tends to be quite a bit harder than old school lacquers and enamels. However, it is pretty scratch sensitive, so you even want to be careful when working by hand. In this situation, we are going to use a DA polisher with Meguiar’s M110 Ultra Pro Speed Compound and a red Foam Cutting Disc to start with. Keep in mind that how you use the compound and the disc can have an impact on how aggressive it is. Prime the disc and set the DA to 4800 OMP’s. Use slow overlapping strokes in an area no bigger than two square feet. We go up and down, then side to side doing both directions twice to give us a good baseline. There’s a little haze left behind. We then step down to testing Meguiar’s M210 Ultra Pro Finishing Polish with a yellow Foam Polishing Disc at 4800 OMP and discover it will remove the haze, but it doesn’t fully remove the defects. It looks like M210 will get the job done if we use it a little more aggressively, and we can do this by slowing down your arm speed, increasing pressure, increase the tool speed or even stepping up to a more aggressive disc. So, it looks like M210 on a red Foam Cutting Disc seems to be the perfect combination here. Make sure you change one variable at a time. If you change too many things at once you can get lost in what is causing the changes that you see. If you don’t get the results you want when working on harder paint, you may need to get more aggressive by increasing the tool speed, increasing pressure, using a more aggressive disc or liquid or shrink your work area. Again, just change one variable at a time. If working on softer paint, you may need to back off the pressure, decrease the tool speed, etc. Ultimately, the goal of the test spot is to find out what the paint wants so we can achieve the goal we are looking for in the most efficient means and while maintaining as much of the integrity of the paint as possible.
