All the non-performance versions of the Model 3 & Model Y got yet another $500 price increase due to supply shortages. It's also been confirmed that the passenger lumbar support has been removed from the Model 3 & Model Y. Elon Musk tweeted: “Moving lumbar was removed only in front passenger seat of 3/Y. Logs showed almost no usage. Not worth cost/mass for everyone when almost never used. Prices increasing due to major supply chain price pressure industry-wide. Raw materials especially” Tesla just announced the official transition to Tesla Vision, their new camera-based Autopilot system. Starting in May 2021, all North American Model 3 and Model Y vehicles will no longer be equipped with radar. These will be the first Tesla vehicles to rely only on camera vision and the neural net to deliver Autopilot and Full-Self Driving features. All new Model S & Model X + all vehicles outside of North America will continue to have radar until Tesla determines the appropriate time to transition those vehicles to Tesla Vision. Tesla is choosing not to use radar as well which has brought concerns to some people who are skeptical about a vision-only system, claiming it could face challenges in the dark, or bright sunny glare, or poor weather which are all conditions where radar would theoretically help. Tesla’s reasoning to go to cameras is mainly that if a human can safely drive a vehicle without a radar, then artificial intelligence with just cameras can too, and hopefully do it even better. There have been Reddit posts of people claiming that the radar-less Tesla Vision is inferior to the previous radar-enabled Autopilot. The initial rollout of Tesla Vision will be limited at first but I certainly hope the Autopilot and FSD experience gets better soon for the pure Tesla Vision and I hope they don’t require auto high beam for Autopilot at night. Tesla is finally deploying its new driver monitoring system in the latest software update where the release notes say: “The cabin camera above your rearview mirror can now detect and alert driver inattentiveness while Autopilot is engaged." This not only should improve the safety but in the future it can hopefully be used in connection with or even separate from the steering wheel nag which requires the driver to keep a hand on the wheel when Autopilot is engaged. Some code found on Tesla’s website hints to a possible price increase of Full Self Driving to $14,000. This isn’t confirmed, but it could definitely come whenever the FSD subscription model is released. The new 2021 refreshed Model S & X infotainment systems will be powered by AMD Ryzen processors & AMD GPUs which should be a big step up in performance.
