Big thanks to Athletic Greens for sponsoring today’s video. Before we go drive the Tesla and experience FSD Beta for the first time, let me quickly explain what it is. Tesla Full Self-Driving Beta simply refers to a single feature called “Autosteer on City Streets” that is part of the entire FSD Capability suite of features that Tesla currently sells for their vehicles. Autosteer on City Streets has been listed as “coming soon” for years on Tesla’s website, but it was only about a year ago when Tesla started to release it to a few select owners in order to test it out. Now, Tesla has started slowly rolling it out to more owners based on their Safety Score. Drivers who scored 99 and 100 have started to get it, but unfortunately I can’t seem to score higher than 97. So in response I tweeted this a couple weeks ago: “Imagine paying $8,000 for Tesla Full Self-Driving in 2018 then after 3 years you’re told to wait 6 more months for a button that, when pressed, puts you in a waiting queue to maybe receive a beta version of the software, but then getting told you’re not a good enough driver for it.” That triggered a lot of people, but my point was that maybe Tesla should release it to the earliest buyers of FSD who have been the most supportive customers over the years. And the biggest rebuttal to this was that Autosteer on City Streets is still very much a work in progress and can be dangerous when put in the hands of an inattentive driver. So to put it to the test I met up with a fellow Tesla owner who lives in my city who has FSD Beta and we took it downtown to see if it’s ready for a wide release like I suggested or if it’s still not ready for prime time just yet.
