Description: A man embarks on a mysterious journey deep into the wilderness in search of the one thing he's been studying his entire life. Meanwhile, his daughter knows something he doesn't and is in pursuit to track him down and stop him from the point of no return. They turn towards the forest for healing and inspiration. Quinn and Dean, had been living in New York City, working as creatives when the work dried up. Laid-off and stuck in their tiny Brooklyn apartment, they decided to move back to Connecticut to be closer to family and nature. Josh, Quinn’s uncle, was working in Connecticut in special education when schools shut down. All of a sudden he had all the time in the world to create the life he always wanted, to live on Earth’s time, in tune with the weather and seasons. He would wake when his body told him to and spend the day in the forest, creating nature art, playing, writing, climbing, meditating, foraging or wandering aimlessly. At night he’d record music, inspired by his daily adventures in the woods. When Quinn and Dean moved back to Connecticut, the three of them found solace and friendship sharing the forest together. They had long walks through the woods, talking about everything from the current state of the world to philosophy, religion, art and film. One day Dean said “Let’s make a movie,” and all of their combined intentions lit up at the prospect. Could they really do it? Just the three of them with no budget? Dean had a camera and a computer and the technical know-how, having made countless Youtube How-To videos. Quinn had the drive and creative bravery to do whatever had to be done, and Josh had a costume and the creative freedom to be whatever they needed him to be. With no previous acting experience, Quinn and Josh approached their roles with freedom, courage and no judgment. This enabled them to have a playful attitude, much like a kindergartener with a crayon. Without time to write a script, they storyboarded a visual journey of shots that could stand on its own with or without dialog. They scouted locations that were close by, adhering to the new world of Covid restrictions. When other actors were needed they cast family members. Quinn, Dean and Josh stayed open to whatever direction the project needed to take and improvised each scene as it happened. This film was truly made “in the moment.” Taller Than the Trees is their ode to the natural world that lifted them up and sustained them throughout the pandemic.
