The song was written by Pink Martini bandleader Thomas M. Lauderdale and lead singer China Forbes, who are featured here, alongside Pink Martini drummer Andrew Borger, for this "quarantine" performance. "Sympathique," the title song to the band's 1997 debut album, has remained popular globally, and was nominated for "Song of the Year" at France's Victoires de la Musique Awards (the French equivalent of the Grammys). They lyrics were inspired by Guillaume Apollinaire's poem "Hotel."
