Description: In ancient times, the Hollow Earth concept of a subterranean land inside the Earth known as Agatha appeared in mythology, folklore and legends. The idea of subterranean realms seemed arguable, and became intertwined with the concept of "places" of origin or afterlife, such as the Greek underworld, the Nordic Svartálfaheimr, the Christian Hell, and the Jewish Sheol (with details describing inner Earth in Kabalistic literature, such as the Zohar and Hesed L'Avraham). The idea of a subterranean realm is also mentioned in Tibetan Buddhist belief. According to one story from Tibetan Buddhist tradition, there is an ancient city called Shamballa which is located inside the Earth. Possibly the first person to scientifically speculate about a hollow earth was none other than Edmund Halley, of Halley’s Comet fame. Proposed in 1692 as a way of explaining anomalous compass readings, Halley’s theory is that the planet is a series of nested, spherical shells, spinning in different directions, all surrounding a central core. In his estimation, based on readings of the magnetic field and what he knew of the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon on the Earth, this model could account for any inaccuracies in his readings of the magnetic fields of the planet. He also posited that the space between each shell may have had luminous atmospheres capable of supporting life. In the secret diary of Admiral Richard Byrds expedition over the North Pole in 1947. This diary notes Byrd's journey into the center of the Earth. He describes an entirely different environment as he passed the Pole, citing rolling green hills and temperatures of 74 degrees Fahrenheit! Directed to land by messages coming into his aircraft, Admiral Byrd explains that he and his pilot were approached by beings of inner Earth who referred them as "surface world men." While Byrd continues his story, he pauses to say that the rest of it is written by memory, unlike the hourly log that describes the craft's landing in the inner Earth. He even mentions that the beings there summoned him to the center after the atomic bombs of World War II awakened their interest in surface humans.
