Description: While sugar may taste sweet, it can have sour effects on our health. Lee Health Registered Dietitian Kat Galeos said too much sugar opens the door for chronic diseases. “We’re going to get that glucose spike and we’re also going to see that glucose dip back down so those spikes if we get them throughout the day that is not good for our body, that’s going to trigger cortisol release it’s also going to trigger inflammation.” Galeos said sugar is hidden in a variety of foods. “Breads contain sugar, sauces contain sugar, dressings contain sugar. Pretty much everything that’s packaged is going to have a little bit of sugar in it.” Galeos said the natural sugars in whole foods are OK, but often we consume much more sugar than we need. “When companies add added sugar to processed foods that’s what we want to look out for,” said Galeos. The best way to avoid overconsumption of sugar is by reading your food’s nutrition label. Now it’s easier than ever to spot added sugar. “Just recently in 2021 they just made it a requirement for all food companies to put on the food label how many grams of added sugar are actually in the food,” said Galeos.
