Description: Soultana Introduction Here we have a piece of music with a distinct Latin feel written in the style of the great Latin Rock band - Santana. In preparation to tackling this piece, I highly recommend you listen to his music, the bands energy and more importantly listen to how the rhythm section groove with an almost hypnotic consistency that draws the listener in. Analysis The piece is constructed using only 2 main parts. An A section, and a B section. The A section is anchored around a C Minor tonality and is voiced mainly using chord tones. The A section is repeated in 4 bar groups to construct bulk of the piece, but the B section sees a change in the chords. In contrast the B section is only 4 bars long and ascends through the chords of Eb and F to lead us back to the A section again. Although these sections just repeat, it’s worth scanning ahead in the music as there are some subtle alterations to the bassline that help add to the overall effect of the groove. So, good luck and look out for these minute details that add up to really make this piece of music groove.
