In a fight for the interim WBC Super Welterweight Title, Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez takes on “The Technician” Alex Bunema in the biggest challenge of his career since his pro debut that began back in December 1997. Prefight records; Martinez 43(23)-1-1, Bunema 30(16)-5-2. Going into the bout, Martinez had a decent win over Adrian Stone (albeit a past best version) while the veteran Bunema had meaningful triumphs over the likes of Vince Phillips & Roman Kamazin. From the opening bell, Martinez’s right jab was razor sharp and despite competing in an 18 foot ring, his lateral movements and footwork (as a whole) were in no way hindered as he thoroughly dominated the seasoned Bunema with power connects mostly to the head. In round 3, Sergio landed a pulverizing left hand that floored the determined Alex who rose to his feet but continued to be overwhelmed with blinding speed and unorthodox angles until he was stopped by the ringside physician in the corner after round 8 ended. At the time of the stoppage, the gutsy Bunema had 2 badly swollen eyes and was way behind in the scorecards as all 3 judges had Martinez ahead 80-71 & 80-70(2x). By CompuBox Punchstats, Sergio thoroughly outclassed the seasoned Congolese warrior by landing 89 more jabs and 92 more power punches within 24 minutes of action. Martinez would have gotten first world title shot against reigning WBC Super Welterweight Champion Vernon Forrest based off the strength of this victory but the opportunity for the 33 year old Argentinian was derailed as Forrest was tragically shot and killed after a botch robbery in a gas station on July 25th 2009 at only 38 years of age. The perpetrator Charman Sinkfield was eventually charged with murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole on October 28th 2016. Fortunately for Maravilla, he eventually earned his chance for Middleweight glory against Kelly Pavlik in April 2010 and won via UD12 after a competitive battle to become the new WBC & WBO World Middleweight Champion. Enjoy this highlight of one of the finest wins in the career of Maravilla Martinez’s, and remember to SUBSCRIBE for continuous boxing goodness. Stay safe and keep punching!
