Description: This is the first recording from my latest trip to Scotland, where I was staying with my good friend, the banjo player and scholar Sam Shackleton. I'd been there once before, some years ago, traveling around trying to meet the best musicians north of Hadrian's wall (youtu.be/67eY_u0dwSc). Sam's name had been passed around, as he is a well known busker in the area. The only banjo player on the Royal Mile, he spent many long days and nights in the shadow of the castle, giving folks the rowdiest traditional twang they've probably ever experienced. He welcomed us with open arms, and we stayed an unfortunately short time, swearing to return. And so, return we have. Funny enough, I returned just in time to watch him graduate. More on that wild night later, but for now, enjoy Sam on one of the most beautiful peaks i've ever seen, overlooking all of Edinburgh, the capitol of Scotland. Arthur's Seat, a fittingly epic view for a truly epic ballad. You can imagine the ancestors standing in that very spot, reciting that very song, which is hundreds of years old itself.
