Description: We often get told to “sacrifice the present for the future”. The entire concept of responsibility is built on this meme; that we must pay our dues, work hard, put in the time, surrender the present for the sake of the future. I get it. The future, of course, should be one where we enjoy the fruits of our labor, in the form of money and material security. This actually makes a lot of sense. You should be friends with your future self, look out for this person! However, this sacrificial work ethic can turn on itself and become pathological. We can become so accustomed to sacrificing the present for the future, so addicted to our productivity, that some arrive at their death bed only to realize they’ve never really lived. Stress and pressure can lead to illness, working jobs we hate to buy things we might not need. The present becomes an elusive thing, we never stop and smell the roses, never go on pilgrimage, never embark on a journey. We miss out on our lives because we get so busy, so distracted. So perhaps we need balance instead: sometimes we sacrifice the present for the future… But sometimes we must sacrifice the future for the present. Sometimes the present matters more. And if we are truly lucky, we find a passion we love so much that both the present can be wonderful while we simultaneously work towards the future.
