Undefeated “Captain Hook” Roy Jones Jr takes on “The Executioner” Bernard Hopkins in a bid for the IBF Middleweight Championship vacated by James “Lights Out” Toney who moved up to 168 pounds and demolished Iran Barkley via RTD9 to garner the IBF World Super Middleweight Title in February 1992. Interestingly, the 28 year old Hopkins and 24 year old Jones and were born on January 15th and January 16th respectively. Prefight records; Jones 21(20)-0, Hopkins 22(16)-1. Entering the fight, Hopkins and Jones were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 by the IBF. Overall, it was a mostly careful and tactical warfare by both men with Roy having landed the cleaner punches throughout the bout with his superior speed and reflexes to overcome Bernard’s defense. Roy had evidently won more rounds over Bernard who had his moments but it was insufficient in comparison. However, Hopkins to his credit displayed great skills, ring smarts, determination and a rock solid chin despite the loss. After 12 rounds, Roy Jones Jr was crowned the new IBF Middleweight Champion via UD12 with scores of 116-112 (3x). With this victory, Captain Hook became the 4th member of team USA from the 1988 Summer Olympics to win a world title joining the likes of Riddick Bowe, Michael Carbajal & Kennedy McKinney. After their 1st fight, both fighters went on to achieve greatness in their own right before meeting in the ring 17 years later for a long awaited rematch that took place on April 3rd 2010. By the time of their return bout, Captain Hook had won world titles at Middleweight, Super Middleweight, Light Heavyweight & Heavyweight with notable wins over the likes of Vinny Pazienza, Mike McCallum, Montell Griffin, Lou Del Valle, Tony Thornton, Jorge Vaca, Thomas Tate, Glenn Wolfe, Otis Grant, Eric Harding, Eric Lucas, Antonio Tarver, Jorge Castro Fernando, Julio Cesar Gonzalez, Merqui Sosa, Richard Hall, Clinton Woods, Felix Trinidad, Thulani Malinga, Virgil Hill, Bernard Hopkins, James Toney & John Ruiz. On the other hand, The Executioner became World Champion at Middleweight & Light Heavyweight and earned victories over top oppositions such as Lupe Aquino, Simon Brown, Keith Holmes, Antwun Echols, Carl Daniels, John David Jackson, Glen Johnson, Roy Jones Jr, Winky Wright, Antonio Tarver, William Joppy, Kelly Pavlik, Beibut Shumenov, Tavoris Cloud, Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Jean Pascal & Robert Allen (2x).
