It was painted in Southern France in the spring of 1890, in response to a letter from Vincent's brother Theo announcing the birth of a son. The brothers were close, and the child was named after Vincent. The painting represents a surge of happiness and energy in the generally depressed life of Van Gogh, who killed himself later that year. The jubilant awakening that is spring was the main idea behind this piece. It starts from a place of relative stasis, and slowly snowballs energy before tumbling to a messy and abrupt conclusion. The video is comprised of shots I took over the last few weeks.
