Description: Contact tmosso@thewatchbox.com for pricing and availability; Either I have it, or I can get it! The “tuxedo dial” Rolex Datejust is a modern-day cult classic. Its size, price, and impressive fit on any wrist cast a broad net of appeal. Unlike the Rolex Submariner, Daytona, and GMT-Master, prices for this versatile Datejust remain reasonable. Add the much loved “tuxedo” dial, and the Datejust 116234 attracts both casual watch buyers and hardcore Rolex collectors. Although more valuable, rarer, and more famous Rolex watches exist, the honest simplicity of a 36mm Rolex Datejust explains its nearly 90-year appeal. With a fine size, this Rolex is suitable for both men and women. In 1945, Rolex celebrated its 40th anniversary or “jubilee” with the release of the Datejust. It combined the “Oyster” water resistant case and “Perpetual” rotor-winding system with a new jumping date. By engineering a rapid turnover of the date at midnight, Rolex watchmakers ensured that the date was always “just” relative to the position of the hands. From the watch’s 1945 beginning, the “Jubilee” bracelet always was offered as an option. In 1954, the Rolex “Cyclops Eye” date magnifier arrived, and the Datejust largely assumed its present-day form. The Rolex Datejust 116234 featured in today’s show is 36mm in diameter and combines primarily stainless steel construction with a white gold bezel. Rolex uses 904L steel, an uncommon alloy in watchmaking, in order to construct a case and Jubilee bracelet with superior corrosion resistance. The white gold bezel is crafted from an alloy known in the watch industry as “grey gold.” This is an 18-karat while gold that is white all the way through; it does not need to be plated with rhodium, and scratches will not reveal a different color below the surface metal. Rolex’s fluted gold bezel is a long-running style convention for the brand. In the parlance of Rolex collectors, a “tuxedo dial” combines a silver-white metallic center with a black outer track for the hours and minutes. Taken together, the two surfaces resemble a man’s tuxedo. On this example Rolex uses hands and hour indices in white gold for easy contrast and long-term resistance to corrosion of these components. While all Rolex Datejust dials are not luminescent, this M-series Rolex 116234 includes both lumed hands and hour indices. A Rolex “roulette” date features alternating black even dates and red odd dates, and it is a highly sought feature on Datejust models. Internally, the Rolex automatic caliber 3135 keeps the time. This manufacture movement features a 48-hour power reserve from a single fast-rotating mainspring barrel. A COSC Swiss chronometer certification attests to the quality of the timekeeping. Rolex includes a quickset date and hacking seconds for precise setting of the time. The Oyster case and Twinlock crown ensure 100-meter water resistance. • 26:21 A.
