Description: Echo is an adult male Gould's Wattled Bat, which is the most common kind of microbat we have in the city area. They have short broad wings which makes them highly manoeuvrable in the lower leafy levels of the canopy but they fly slower than the higher canopy microbats who have longer narrower wings and fly faster. Their prey is small insects, mosquitoes and moths and whatever is flying at night they can find. They echolocate to find their prey and hunt. Unfortunately Echo was dead when I arrived. I suspect he may have been in the house for a few days, unseen, before being discovered where he hung and died. His body was quite dehydrated. I love it when the MOPs are interested in the bat and about the bat and want to take photos, because it's something they've never seen before. I always have time for this and them and their interest. And of course, the rain, the torrential rain and the massive electrical storm I waited out before driving to the rescue which was quite local. Sydney doesn't do well in the rain - it doesn't have the drainage capacity for rapid drainage for torrential rain and the lower lying areas of the road remain covered in water for days. RIP little Echo
