Description: This is Ali, he is a refugee living in Germany. As a kid, his dream was to be a pilot. For many in his position, this dream would feel impossible. As a child, he fled war torn Afghanistan and escaped to Iran. He grew up as an illegal immigrant working in a carpet factory 12 hours a day 7 days a week. At the age of 14 he decided to run away and, without telling his family, he crossed the border to Turkey by foot. He walked for 31 hours over the mountains, was smuggled into Greece on a boat, walked 90km to get new documents, walked from Serbia to Hungry and then got smuggled in a van to Germany with absolutely no belongings, all to try and start a new life. After being welcomed as a refugee, he was so determined to start his new life that he studied 12 hours a day to learn to speak German. He told his teacher that his dream was to become a pilot and amazingly his teacher paid for him to go to a flight school. Now, he is part of a gliding club and is on his way to achieving his dream! Ali’s dedication to follow his dream is incredibly inspiring and highlights that there are many people in the world with dreams that, from no fault of their own, have been born into kto war torn countries and that throws their life into chaos, forcing them to seek safety somewhere new. As someone from a country that could offer support to people like Ali, who want an opportunity at a fresh start, I want to ask our leaders to welcome people in that need refuge. The number of global refugees has doubled in the last 10 years from 40 million to over 80 million. In the US, despite a huge jump in refugee admission, there could be so much more done to increase lawful pathways into the country. Let's push for better support and services to receive, support and protect our neighbors
