Description: [Simple] How to fold a kinetic modular sculpture of a tail that expands when you let go. No tape, no glue! This deployable model holds together just with pure origami locks. Simply flick it downward and gravity will expand the tail! I named the model Rainbow Falls, but it can also be called dragon tail, kite tail, unicorn tail or whatever other name you come up with like.... Pin the Tail on the Donkey? This model is surprisingly easy to fold, so I would not be too surprised if it's been designed before, but I certainly haven't seen it. If I am not the first to discover it, and you have seen a similar model please let me know where in the comments below so I can give proper credit of prior discovery. My inspiration for designing this model came from folding David Brill's Origami Unstabile whose diagrams are published here: vallebird.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/unstabile.pdf After folding that model, I experimented with different modular attachments that can slide similar to his and came up with this one, and that's how this model was born! The amount of space that you leave between the two flaps of the kite base helps determine how smooth the modules will slide apart. I haven't tried it, but I imagine that putting some sort of extra weight into the bottom module would help make it easier to slide out when you let go. Special for my members I figured out and made a tutorial for how to attach four Rainbow Falls together to form an expanding 4-pointed star. Asking on Facebook if anyone has seen this model, my friend MaryAnn wrote that she "wondered if it is the same as the unit that adds extra wings on a crane? (Fuse maybe?)," and from this I was able to find an image on the internet that matched her description: static1.1.sqspcdn.com/static/f/436570/28132905/1558627861407/Sheridan-Origami-Super-Cra00.jpg?token=cmT57ZnJtCpkdI9pUN3MJaVUe78%3D and the article that this picture was attached to indicated that it was titled "Super Crane" and was created in 2017 by Tomoko Fuse and Akiko Yamanashi. That model looks similar and slides the same amount as mine, but upon close inspection (of the pic), their one is different from the one I made. On mine the tips of the crane wings are folded (all except for the front one), and the tips of the interior white wings are also folded, all which allows there to be strong stop as the modules are pulled apart and results in less friction as well, enabling the modules to fall apart more easily, especially with the little space I added between the two flaps of the kite base. #RainbowFalls #RainbowToy #JeremyShaferOrigami Timecodes: 0:00 - 0:43 Intro 0:43 - 4:08 How to make the first module 4:08 - 4:39 Making the rest of the modules (time lapse) 4:39 - 6:04 How to attach the modules 6:04 - 6:59 Done!
