Most other years, this would mean a month of parades, parties, and pride! But this year, things are a tad different. For one, we find ourselves in a particularly hostile environment and our rights under attack here and abroad. But despite all that, our worst enemy is ourselves. We criticize ourselves, judge ourselves, and punish ourselves for not meeting the ideal body or self that we think we should have. I'm no exception to this. In fact, I feel like I've done a far better job of hating myself than most. So when MeUndies contacted me about taking part in their "Celebrate Yourself" campaign, I got really excited, since I think it touches on what makes Pride something that's truly universal. Everyone knows what it's like to feel shame. Everyone knows what it's like to feel uncomfortable in their skin and struggle with body image. Body positivity isn't just something that LGBT people grapple with, although we do definitely tend to struggle more than most. People who see LGBT Pride festivals and feel alienated clearly don't understand the true meaning of Pride. It's not about "throwing our identity in people's faces". It's about rejecting the shame and self-hatred put onto us by the outside world. It's announcing to each other and ourselves how much we love our bodies and ourselves, and encourage others to follow suit. Regardless of their shape, size, color, ethnicity, sexuality...human beings are truly amazing creatures. And so I hope you guys join me and celebrate yourself this month! In tough times like these, self love isn't just a way to survive. Self love becomes an act of defiance!
