Well, you came to the right lesson! To get a sound that will strongly connect with the slick chill effect of this style you need not learn any crazy scales. Instead, all you need to focus on is the chords that you’re doing and how to line up the addition of any filler tones. Allow me to explain… I’m going to show you the best way to perform in the style of Neo-Soul /Chill guitar that offers the best phrasing to connect directly into a key. In fact, most of the chords we’ll use will be seventh-chord shapes you likely already know! The trick to this is taking each chord through its full range by applying a few well-placed filler licks, (something often not being done). To start, it helps to understand a bit about diatonic harmony. Are you aware that there are 3 primary chord types? This style is responsive to using scale passages played around the chords as filler licks. The other factor is using Dominant 7 chords as “Secondary Dominants.” And, we will cover all of these ideas throughout this lesson plan!
