Antiepileptics work in a number of different ways to inhibit or slow down neuronal firing to prevent seizures from occurring. This pharmacology lecture covers topics such as pathophysiology and classification of seizures, action potential, excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission (role of glutamate and GABA), voltage-gated sodium and calcium channels, AMPA and NMDA receptors, mechanism of action and side effects of antiepileptic drugs.
