In “Coast to Coast”, undefeated 25 year old “The Punisher” Paul Williams takes on 29 year old WBO World Welterweight Champion Antonio Margarito aka “The Tijuana Tornado”. Prefight records; Williams 32(24)-0, Margarito 34(24)-4. In March 2002, Margarito lifted the vacant WBO World Welterweight Crown via TKO10 over Antonio Diaz and made 7 successful defenses notably over Andrew Lewis, Sebastian Lujan, Kermit Cintron & Joshua Clottey between October 2002 and December 2006. For his 8th defense, he was set to take on the exceptionally tall and rangy rising Welterweight star Paul Williams who will be fighting in his first world title opportunity. From the opening bell, Williams threw in high outputs that largely swarmed the 6-5 betting favorite Margarito for the first few rounds although the champion took the shots well and landed some good punches of his own but evidently overwhelmed in the first 12 minutes. In rounds 5 & 6, Antonio connected with a number of good right hands to the head as his body work began to pay dividends in addition to Paul having slightly slowed down from his own frantic pace for 4 rounds. Both fighters arguably split a round apiece in this 6 minute sequence. Margarito appeared to have caught Williams’ rhythm as he was able to land more accurately upstairs and downstairs while blocking most punches in rounds 7 & 8, but Paul came back well in round 9 as he once again outworked Antonio who also had his moments with a few clean right hands. The tides were turned again in round 10 as Margarito found the mark upstairs with a number of solid rights especially in the last 15 seconds where both traded explosively but it was the challenger who was shook before the bell sounded. Antonio did his best work in round 11 where he unleashed a typhoon of pain to The Punisher who was rocked several times. However, Margarito wore himself out as he entered the final round thus Williams was able to once again outland him as the fight came to a close. After 36 minutes of intense action, the 3 judges scored it 116-112 & 115-113(2x) for Paul Williams who became the new WBO World Welterweight Champion. By CompuBox Punch Stats, the South Carolinian who retained his unblemished record average nearly 100 shots thrown per round and dispensed 1083 total punches which almost doubled the numbers by Margarito at 571.
