Description: BECOME A PATRON: patreon.com/joshfossgreen I’ve heard (and personally performed) many clumsy bass fills in my day. In today’s lesson I’ll share a quick tip to help you avoid this common bass fill problem - ending your fills too early! In a mad scramble to get back to the bass line we’re supposed to be playing, bass players often cut off their fills too soon, which creates an awkward moment in the tension-release cycle of the bass line. We create tension with the fill, release the tension too early, and then flatline for a beat or two until the bass line comes back in. This structure isn’t always bad, but when done habitually and unconsciously, it tends to create results that aren’t much fun to play or listen to. In this lesson I’ll demonstrate a few improvised fills that end too early, and then play with correcting the issue. See if you can hear the difference in the resolution point, and how nice it can feel for a fill to keep the flow running right into beat 1 of your bass line.
