See an excerpt from David Byrne below. Neko Case writes short stories and then sings them. I find that I am drawn to her music and writing - probably because it is so different from my own. Her songs seem driven by the character and their stories and situations. So sometimes the songs seem to take a winding path, with details of place and feeling dropped here and there. Sometimes the song is guided by the story more than the usual verse-chorus-verse structure we might be used to. We the listener have to imagine ourselves as that character - and when we do what might seem at first impressionistic is in fact very straightforward and descriptive.
