The song was first released on a single by Arthur Prysock (1963). A large number of covers of the song appeared, including a big hit for Percy Sledge (1969 and 1974). There was also a modest hit by the Dutch music group Big, Black & Beautiful in 2008. In addition, several other covers appeared in foreign charts. The song is about a man who hears a choir sing the song Ave Maria. He sings it with all his heart. He sends a special prayer to heaven, with the wish that his beloved will come back to him.
