In fact, these buildings were constructed in 1979, before the world was fully aware of global warming. They were built on a sandbar that began to erode, and the people had to abandon it in 1992. Unfortunately, the massive home on stilts was not to last, and the disturbing looking structure still sits above the waterline out at sea. 10. Isla de las Muñecas This island, located in Mexico, sounds like a paradise at first glance. If you weren’t paying attention, you’d want to take a vacation there. When you’re thinking of sunny places for a great vacation and relaxation, visiting an island sounds like an excellent idea. But not so on Isla de las Munecas. 9. The Isle of Wight The Isle of Wight is located in the UK. A lot of places on this island have strange occurrences, especially in the Ventnor botanic gardens and Knighton Gorges Manor, two uniquely creepy places on this southern neighbor of England. 8. Daksa Island This island has a tragic and evil history, one that it doesn’t really deserve. Nevertheless, it’s haunted by the remnants of the men who once died here. Daksa Island is located in Croatia, and at the end of WWII, dozens were executed on its rocky shores. History has it that after the Germans were defeated in the most deadly war in human history, some suspected Nazi collaborators were taken from Dubrovnik and brought to this island. 7. Norfolk Island Who wouldn’t want to take a vacation on a remote tropical island? You get to have a billion sand grains massaging your feet, a beautiful orchestra of waves and tides parted by the birds singing high soprano notes, the breeze in your face and an endless horizon of sea and sky, and all alongside natural decorations with green trees and shrubs, colorful plants and animals. Amidst all these beautiful sceneries you find on islands, sometimes unusual things happen. 6. North Brother Island North Brother Island is in the United states of America, but it’s not somewhere Americans want to go on vacation. It’s located in New York City, between The Bronx and Rikers Island. It’s not a pleasant place to visit. This island is important to history because it was a quarantine center to the first asymptomatic patient of typhoid fever. Have you ever heard the story of “typhoid Mary”? Well Mary was her actual name. Mary Mallon. 5. Deadman’s Island Deadman’s Island is found in Vancouver, Canada. The name of this island already sounds haunted right? There are actually creepy noises and sobs of a woman can still be heard from an unknown distance and location. One fascinating reason why this island was given this name was because history has it that this island was once the site of a severe battle where lots of people had died. 4. Hart Island This eerie place is located in the United States. It was even nicknamed the “Island of the dead”. This island in particular has served a lot of purposes ranging from military training grounds to a hospital for tuberculosis, prison, and narcotic rehabilitation center. It was once used as a quarantine site for yellow fever and an Asylum for women only. 3. Palmyra Island This place is located in the Pacific Ocean, and boasts abundant vegetation and a reef with colorful marine organisms occupying it. But it has experienced quite a large number of very strange and paranormal activities. Many have been led to believe that the island is even cursed. The first time this island was ever discovered was in the year 1798 when Captain Edmund Fanning was sailing to Asia. 2. Cross Island This island, located in Maine, is part of a national wildlife center. It might interest you to know that this haunted uninhabited island was once home to a number of people. Today the remains of abandoned school buildings, homes are still left standing. It is now home to only eagles, birds, ospreys and white-tailed deer. An interesting fact is that on this island lies a treasure in a small beach. This treasure is believed to be cursed. 1: Poveglia And now to the number one world's most haunted Island; the island of Poveglia in Italy. The strange activities in this place dates all the way back to the era of the bubonic plague. The bubonic plague is a disease of the lymphatic system caused by bacterial infection and is transmitted by fleas around the 1700s.
