Description: MERCURY LIVING PRESENCE VINYL SERIES – ORDER HERE lnk.to/MLPVinylID To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Mercury Living Presence, Decca Classics is releasing a new series of limited edition, half-speed mastered vinyl titles. The first batch of titles includes Mercury’s first classical recording: Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, with Rafael Kubelík conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra — the release which led Howard Taubman, chief music critic of The New York Times to write, “One feels one is listening to the living presence of the orchestra”. For this new series, the original first-generation master tapes were sourced and new HD transfers made at Abbey Road Studios. New 3-to-2 mixes for stereo titles were produced by Thomas Fine, son of the original producer and recording engineer for the majority of Mercury Living Presence titles. This master audio was then cut to lacquer by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, using his unique, super high-fidelity half-speed lathe. Mastering to lacquer at half-speed has the advantage of halving the high-frequency energy passing through the cutterhead, producing a cleaner and more precise top-end of the audio spectrum due to a more accurately etched groove. The cleaner top-end results in a more detailed and stable stereo image and lifelike soundstage. All titles pressed on 180gm heavyweight vinyl at Optimal in Germany. Mercury Living Presence recordings are highly dynamic, pushing the technical capabilities of the original recording equipment to the limit. In a modern setting, especially in the context of a Half-Speed Mastered LP, the full dynamic range on the tapes makes its way to the grooves. This may require the listener to turn up the system volume to a higher level than they may be accustomed. All efforts were made to present these discs on quiet, high-quality vinyl, so listening at “concert hall levels” should not include an objectionable increase in background surface noise.
