Description: We briefly touch on the incident of Mike Tyson punching an annoying guy on a plane. Grappler and MMA fighter Gary Tonin chimed in with a salient point. BJJ coach Tom Deblass recently reposted a popular jiu-jitsu meme telling men who wear spats (tight fitting spandex pants) to the gym that they need to wear loose fitting shorts over the top of their spats. It’s not just a meme, it’s a rule at Coach Deblass’ gym. When asked why the rule applied only to men, but not women, Deblass replied that men in tights would scare away “middle aged women who don’t compete” from training at his gym. In response, several middle aged women who don’t compete chimed in to say that training with men who wear form fitting sports leggings doesn’t bother them at all. So what’s the real reason? Simple: pathologizing masculinity. Being a man is not a disease. ——— Ramsey Dewey is an MMA coach and fight commentator, and occasional musician based in Shanghai, China.
