The phenomenally quick handed Meldrick Taylor aka “The Kid” takes on unbeaten Luis Garcia in the first defense of his WBA World Welterweight Championship. This was a co-main event along with Terry Norris vs Donald Curry for the WBA World Super Welterweight Title. Prefight records; Taylor 26(14)-1-1, Garcia 22(18)-0. In March 1990, Taylor lost his IBF World Junior Welterweight Title via TKO12 to the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez Sr in one of the greatest world title fights in the history of the sport. 5 months after suffering the first setback of his pro career, he moved up to 147 pounds and made his debut with a UD10 win over Primo Ramos. In January 1991, Meldrick became World Champion in 2 weight divisions with a UD12 triumph over then unbeaten Aaron Davis to bag the WBA World Welterweight Title. For his very first defense, he was up against the hard hitting no. 1 ranked Venezuelan fighting for a world title for the very first time. It was also his first time fighting in the United States. Going into the bout, the Luis had a notable win over Nino LaRocca while Meldrick had victories over top oppositions such as Aaron Davis, Buddy McGirt & Harold Brazier. The challenger was very game throughout, as he utilized solid jabs and long right hands which consistently troubled the champion who often resorted to lunging with power shots whilst taking lots of risks in a hard fought effort to keep his title via SD12 after an intense high speed chess match. 1 judge scored the bout 117-114 for the very game Garcia while 2 judges had it 118-112 & 115-113 for Taylor. In the other co-main event, Terry Norris as the 4-1 betting favorite sent Donald Curry into retirement via KO8 to retain his WBA World Super Welterweight Championship.
