Description: Can Louisville recover from the rioting that happened here? Louisville Kentucky. A lot of people have never been here before. But everyone knows about it. What is it? Is it fun? Is it clean? Is it all horse racing, whiskey drinking basketball fans? I had to know. So I when I had a chance to stop for a day I was all yes and got off I-64 to spend a day here. The day I picked for the drive was a really nice one - it was midweek, just before Thanksgiving. It was late morning when I arrived, and the sun was shining bright. The perfect day to grab a bourbon and take a short tour of Louisville, Kentucky! There’s a debate among people in Kentucky - is this state in the south or the midwest? It’s kinda both if you think about it. It’s sorta southern in places but looks like you’re in the midwest in others. It’s a great state filled with lots of friendly and generous people. The biggest city in Kentucky is Louisville. There’s about 630,000 people here, making it the 29th biggest city in the country. Louisville is about the same size as Memphis and way bigger than Baltimore these days. It’s growing here. Not by a lot, but it’s certainly not shrinking. Of course you probably know Louisville as the place where they make baseball bats and race horses. What we’re going to do is drive around downtown Louisville and talk to people who live here. We’ll talk about the good and the bad and what this city is all about. It’s time to get the Deets on Louisville! Now downtown Louisville has some culture. It’s not going to blow you away with things to do, but you could stay busy here for a weekend I suppose. I mentioned the Louisville slugger factory and museum. That’s downtown. There’s also an arena called the KFC Young Center downtown, but by the time you watch this video it might be called something else. This is where the university of Louisville plays its basketball games. You’ll see it on the drive. Outside of downtown is where the Kentucky Derby is located at a place called Churchill Downs. Here’s what that looks like. No one really talks about the Derby until 2 weeks out from race day, which is always in early May. A lot of people in Louisville go to the Derby or throw big parties the day of the race. The Derby kinda brings a normally segregated city together for one afternoon so that’s good. To the south of downtown it’s kinda rough, and west of downtown is SUPER rough. Like shootings every night. You don’t want to go to west Louisville. I did go to west Louisville and I showed you what that looks like in another video. Cause I’m very brave. The east side of Louisville is average - kinda middle class and sorta safe. There’s a lot of bars, restaurants and shopping out that way, especially on Bardstown Road. North of Louisville is where all of the kinda rich people live, and the far northern fringes of Louisville is where the SUPER rich people live. Papa John lives in the far north end of Louisville. He makes pizzas. Here’s a map that my friend Chris made which helps explain the different sides of town. He lives in Louisville. Most of the growth is taking place here on the far eastern fringes of Louisville as well as across the Ohio River in southern Indiana. Cause it’s cheaper up there. There’s some decent jobs in Louisville. There are lots of good factory jobs. Ford, GE and Amazon have factories, and there’s some good healthcare jobs. This is also the hub for UPS, so there’s a lot of logistics jobs. I found downtown to be mostly clean and there weren’t very many homeless people around. I also thought it was pretty safe walking around downtown at night. But I’m sure that changes week by week.
