You want to be true to your roots and your style of music, but you also want to make your listeners happy by choosing to do a mainstream song that’s currently climbing the charts. However, the decision to re-create the song “Jeena Jeena” from the film Badlapur seemed a natural choice from the moment I heard it. Originally composed by Sachin-Jigar and sung by Atif Aslam, it’s a sweet and simple tune that had “88KeysToEuphoria” written all over it…. :) As in most of my acoustic covers, what you hear is purely live instrumentation without the use of any synthesized sounds or loops. I’ve always loved the aesthetic and sonic harmony that is created when the flute and violin are married in a piece. Sandeep Thakur (Strings) and I worked to compose a string section that provides a soul to the piece without becoming too grand that it overthrows the simplicity of the melody. Sahil Khan (flute) adds a touch of traditional bansuri to balance the western influences of the viola and violin. The cajon, performed by Rupak Dhamankar, gives the song a life force. I’ve also collaborated for the first time with vocalist Shweta Subram, who’s work I’ve been watching for many years. Her rustic texture is what drew me to her voice and I felt it would be the perfect foil to Atif Aslam’s vocals in the original song.
