Description: James turned a year old about 2 months ago, and I wanted to film something special for it. Our new house was still in boxes, and the air conditioning was broken, but it was so fun. James’s Tio Yayo shot it, his uncle Henry did the music, and I made some cake. These quick, purely creative projects are how I started The Kitchy Kitchen (with Yayo, even back then!), and I feel like I’ve gotten a little off track, being so “content” focused. I miss this - attempting to capture a moment or a feeling on film. I wanted it to feel like a memory, refracted and soft at the edges. I’m a bit of a hoarder, especially with memories, and have this intense archival impulse. I interview family members with a recorder, catalog old photos, hold onto objects and clothing from generations past, and I think this is an extension of that. James had started walking seconds before shooting this, and though it’s impossible, I wanted to crystalize it, just for a moment. His dimples and fistfuls of cake, his riot of giggles. I’m just trying to catch a falling star and put it in my pocket.
