Nothing, however, compares to the bond formed by this 59-year-old chimp and her long-time caregiver. Mama, the chimp, was first encountered by Jan van Hooff, an emeritus professor of behavioral biology at Utrecht University and co-founder of the Burgers colony, in 1972. Mr. van Hooff used to be the chimp’s keeper for a brief time. Despite this, the two of them built an unbelievable friendship.
