About 1423, the epidemic of the plague in Bologna triggered extreme panic along the Adriatic coast of Italy. Guillaume Du Fay, now commonly regarded as the greatest European composer of the fifteenth century, wrote an isorhythmic motet asking for divine aid against this plague. Du Fay merged two pre-existing Latin prayers to Saint Sebastian for his motet's text. Du Fay's motet is expressing fear of the plague. Sebastian was an underground Christian and a high-ranking officer under Roman emperor Diocletian, who ruled from 284 to 305 GC. Sebastian cured the sick and called for conversion to Christianity. For these violations, Diocletian commanded the archers to kill Sebastian. ---- This polyphony was performed Huelgas-Ensemble / Artistic Director Paul Van Nevel (C) master copyright is owned by Harmonia Mundi S.
