SOUNDBITE (English) Vera Rasnake, Trainer, Iowa Greyhound Park: "I've been part of all the good, and I just- it's very- I think that when they hear those things, and they think there's bad, I think greyhound racing has got a bad rap because of that." 10. Handler walking with greyhound STORYLINE: After the end of this 2022 season in May, the Iowa Greyhound Park track in Dubuque, Iowa, will close for good. By the end of the year there will only be two tracks left in the country. It's been a long slide for greyhound racing, which reached its peak in the 1980s when there were more than 50 tracks scattered across 19 states. Since then, increased concerns about how the dogs are treated along with an explosion of gambling options has nearly killed the sport. For some animal welfare groups, the industry's collapse is the culmination of decades of work to publicize allegations of greyhound mistreatment. Industry supporters note there now is a huge demand to adopt retired racers and deny that the other problems are widespread. They also contend that some don't understand the love greyhounds have for running. Vera Rasnake, a trainer at Iowa Greyhound Park, discusses her disappointment for the closure of the park and for the dwindling of greyhound racing. "It's very sad. Especially in this area. This Dubuque area. I've gotten to really love it here, and with it being seasonal for me it's very sad to see the city lose the revenue that is from here," she said. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: info@aparchive.com (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
