Description: II কাপতান বাজার হাটে কবুতরের দাম জানুন II Kaptan Bazar Pigeon Hat 2019 II || Adout Kaptan Bazar Pigeon Hat || Just as the Thatari Bazar in Central Dhaka gathered pace, pigeon sellers started setting up shops under the Hanif flyover. Well, they were not exactly shops. The sellers were either squatting or roaming with small cages containing two or four doves, mainly homers apart from other species, when big droplets of rain started coming down. It was enough to drench the pigeons as they were unable to fly to drier perches. Soon, it started pouring heavily, forcing a few buyers and sellers scurry for cover. Before the rain came down, Pappu and Sumon, two HSC students from Dhalpur, a southern suburb of Dhaka, were desperately looking for buyers, who gather there every Friday to buy pigeons and raise them for sport – a passion that is increasingly becoming popular. For some, it’s a big sport to command the pigeons to fly in formations under the azure sky and return to their master’s home. Hence, they came to be known as homers. The gloomy faces of the two young men brightened when this correspondent enquired about the price of four pigeons, huddling inside the cages to escape the rain. They enthusiastically held up the cages with four homers. They asked for Tk. 5,000 for the birds along with the cages and a small earthen pot for food. Few other sellers gathered around us, thinking that my photo journalist colleague, Mizanur Rahman Khan, and I were genuine buyers. “Well, if you take them, you can have them for Tk. 2,000,” offered another young man, showing us a cage with four homers. The homers are considered to be the best breed among pigeons to keep at home and play. They can be released to fly in the open sky individually or in formations. They return to their base on roof tops or balconies, responding to their owner’s calls. “The rain came as a curse today (Friday),” hissed Sumon, the youngest among the sellers, as he watched others undercutting his price by offering to sell the pigeons at throwaway prices because of the rain. Had it not been raining, the situation at the ‘Kobutorer Haat’ (pigeon market), as it’s popularly known, would have been different. The pigeon sellers gather every Friday morning under the flyover besides the chicken market in Thatari Bazaar before buses and rickshaws takeover the area. It’s one of the oldest kitchen markets in the city. Breeders of these pigeons come from faraway places like Brahmanbaria and Munshiganj, said Sumon, who helps his family to breed and train homers before bringing them to the Kobutorer Haat. There is another place where breeders gather at Mirpur known as the Kobutorer Club, said Sumon. But the Thatari Bazaar remains the biggest market where, according to Pappu and Sumon, at times pigeons are sold for Tk. 50,000- 1 Crore for a set of four birds that some pigeons lovers do not hesitate to pay. These expensive birds are reportedly used for racing and betting. But the market has gone down in the past few years due to political turmoil and economic slowdown, said Sumon. For him, much depends on this business as his family virtually lives on raising and selling pigeons. It also helps him to continue with his college studies. Sumon hopes to strike a big sale for his homers someday that will allow him to rent a space inside the bazaar, where besides chicken, other birds such as pigeons, koels and titir (Guinea fowls) are also sold. At times, prohibited birds are also brought to the market for sale. The market starts at 8:00 am every Friday. On a sunny day, the business is good. “But rainy days are bad for us,” said Sumon, looking around for genuine buyers. “Sometimes we are troubled by hoods and policemen who are on the prowl looking for prohibited birds. They try to extort money from us under the pretext of checking our birds,” said the pigeon seller. But the police from the nearby Gulistan Sergeant Ahad outpost denied allegations of harassing the pigeon sellers. Instead, they claimed to provide protection to the pigeon sellers from troublemakers, allowing the buyers and sellers to carry out business transactions peacefully. “We only look around for sale of birds that are protected under the law,” said a policeman at the Gulistan crossing. Khalid Ahmed, Estate Officer, Dhaka South City Corporation said, “Like roving chicken and duck sellers, the pigeon sellers do not require any trade licence. They are allowed to stay for sometime without obstructing the traffic on the street below the flyover.”
