Description: Ursula K. Le Guin's poem "Hymn to Time," read by Georgina McKay Lodge and accompanied on the baroque violin by Augusta McKay Lodge. Music from Bach's Sonata No. 3 in C Major for baroque violin BWV 1005. Hymn to Time, by Ursula K. Le Guin Adagio from Violin Sonata No. 3 BWV 1005, by Johann Sebastian Bach Augusta McKay Lodge, baroque violin Georgina McKay Lodge, voice The timelessness of Bach combined with a thought-provoking poem by Ursula K. Le Guin. “Hymn to Time” is from one of the last poetry collections Le Guin published. It ponders eternity through the lens of chance. In the preface to Late in the Day, she wrote, “Science describes accurately from outside, poetry describes accurately from inside. Science explicates, poetry implicates. Both celebrate what they describe.” If science and poetry are two of the languages with which we can make sense of the universe, it seems fitting to also include music as a third. This Adagio in particular, from Bach’s C Major violin sonata, suspends us in relentless dotted rhythms which tick by like a clock. Used by permission of Curtis Brown, Ltd.
