I have recently been getting into "vocals only" videos, and I figured it was finally time to show everybody what my raw vocals sound like in 2016! Here is my signal chain: I sing into an MXL9000 microphone, which runs into a Behringer Ultra-gain pre-amp, which runs into PODFarm2, and from there I have it going through a PODFarm2 compressor into Cubase 6. This is the raw signal, so you are not hearing any post-processing, just the one main vocal track and the background layers. There are a handful of spots where I did the vocals directly into an amp simulator from PODFarm2 and others where I recorded with reverb on from PODFarm2. I also fade each individual breath so they are not as harsh-sounding, but because of the reverb, you sometimes get weird dips in the audio. These vocals are obviously not in one take, so there are a couple of spots where you might hear me punch in a different take, but I tried to tidy it up as much as possible. There is no auto-tune, Melodyne, or pitch-correction on the cleans. My mindset has always been to just record it over and over until I get it right. All of the high, mid, and low screams are false cord. I do not do any fry screaming in this song whatsoever. The rasp on my cleans is glottal compression, and I intentionally over-project at the end to make it sound more emotional, which is dangerous.
